Jilin University, founded in 1946, located in Changchun, the capital city of Jilin Province, is a key national comprehensive university, under the direct jurisdiction of the Chinese Ministry of Education.
In 2000, the former Jilin University merged with four other universities, namely former Jilin University of Technology, former Norman Bethune Medical University, former Changchun University of Science and Technology, and former Changchun College of Posts and Communications. In 2004, the former University of Military Logistics also became part of Jilin University.
Jilin University has become the biggest university in China by its largest enrolment. It offers the programs covering 13 disciplinary categories, including philosophy, economics, law, education, literature, history, science, engineering, agriculture, medicine, management, military science and arts. It offers 124 undergraduate programs, 299 master’s program, 237 doctoral programs and 41 post-doc programs.
Jilin University has eight campuses, seven of which are in Changchun and one in Zhuhai, Guangdong Province. Jilin University covers an area of 6.11 million square meters in Changchun and 3.34 million square meters in Zhuhai. The main university library is recognized by UNESCO, UNIDO and the World Bank, and boasts a collection of 6.98 million volumes. It also serves as the northeast China center for the “China Academic Library & Information System,” one of only seven centers across China.
In 2013, Jilin University ranked No. 8 in China’s College and University Rankings, published by the China University Alumni Association and 301-400 in the world, according to the Academic Ranking of World Universities, conducted by Shanghai Jiao Tong University. Chemistry, material science, physics, engineering, clinical medicine, geo-science, biology and bio-chemistry rank in the top 1% of the Essential Science Indicators global ranking. Moreover, material science ranks 38th and chemistry ranks 55th, putting both of them in the top 1‰ in the world.
Jilin University is home to 69,000 full-time students, including over 24,000 graduate students, 43,000 undergraduate students and 2,000 international students from 98 countries.
Norman Bethune College of Medicine Jilin University is the former Norman Bethune Medical University, set in 1939, initially a military medical school. Supported by the MOH and MOE in China, it acts as an important base with considerable scale and academic ability in medical education and research.
JLU is recognized by WHO and the graduates of MBBS program are eligible to take the Medical Licensing Examinations held by the medical councils in different countries such as MCI, PMDC, USMLE, HPCSA, SCHS etc.
